Jasmine's Story

#MyYUStory

Hi, I’m Jasmine Naim. I’m from Los Angeles, CA.

“So You Think Stern Can Dance” was one of the activities I was most excited to get involved in at YU. It’s completely student-run, for women, by women. Typically participants audition as either dancers or choreographers, but I chose to do both. It’s an incredible event. From rehearsals and event planning to the actual performance, I gained so much from the entire process. At most universities, dance performances and travel conflict with Shabbat, but at Stern, there are no limits!

Academically, YU is similar to other top universities: my classes are rigorous and the workload can be challenging, but I like to be busy. As a Math major, I’ve been impressed by YU’s commitment to women in STEM. There are so many informational, mentoring and networking events outside the classroom and there is such an emphasis on empowering women in STEM careers. After I graduate I plan to work in data analytics.

Last summer, I had a bioinformatics internship at Bar Ilan University. Along with other Stern College students, I had the opportunity to see Israel at the forefront of biological research, while being exposed to typical Israeli daily life. From 9 to 5, I did research on a disease known as African Sleeping Sickness, conducting genomic data analysis. Also, living on YU’s Bayit Vegan campus, we were able to attend shiurim and learn with other YU students.

This confirmed my desire to work in a data-driven field and provided an ideal Torah Umadda experience!
