Whether you are interested in spending time overseas, doing independent research, or going to graduate school, the Advisor for Fellowships and Prizes can help you apply for nationally and internationally competitive grants to help you realize your goals. These include the Marshall, Rhodes, Fulbright, Goldwater and Truman for undergraduates, graduating seniors, and alumni.

The process of applying for fellowships and awards is often more about the journey than the final destination. Regardless of whether or not you win an award, the application process will help you clarify your goals for the future, find out more about yourself and your value systems, improve your writing and interviewing skills, and even give you a head start on preparing graduate school application materials.

Marshall Scholarship
Description
Forty scholarships are awarded annually to finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree at any institution in the United Kingdom for two years.
Selection Criteria

Candidates must have graduated from their undergraduate institution after April 2016

Candidates must not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University.

After submitting your application materials, you will be interviewed in person (or by telephone if you are unavailable in person) by members of the Fellowships and Prizes Committee.

When all interviews are completed, the committee will select Yeshiva University’s nominees and notify you of your status.

You will have an opportunity to make final revisions to your application before submitting it on-line. The national deadline is in early October.

Within several weeks, Marshall will notify you to tell you if you have been selected to interview at the regional level. (Interviews occur during the second or third week of November.)

Shortly after the regional interviews, you will be told whether or not you have won a Marshall Scholarship.
Rhodes Scholarship
Description
Thirty two scholarships are awarded annually to provide for two years of graduate study at the University of Oxford, England (with the possibility of renewal for a third year).
Selection Criteria

U.S. citizenship (Applications are also accepted from students who are citizens of Bermuda, Canada, the Commonwealth of the Caribbean, Kenya, Singapore, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.)

Energy to use one's talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports

Fulbright Grants
Description
Approximately 1,560 grants are awarded annually for one academic year to pursue graduate study, conduct independent research, or participate in a teaching assistantship in over 155 countries around the world.
Selection Criteria

Open to graduating seniors and alumni (no age limits)

Graduating seniors must go through Yeshiva University’s internal process; alumni may apply independently as "at-large" candidates, or submit their applications through YU’s internal process.
-
Be in good health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Medical Certificate of Health from a physician.
-
Have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study. This is especially important for projects in the social sciences and the humanities.
-
Applicants may hold a J.D. degree at the time of application, but not a doctorate.
-
Preference is usually given to applicants who:
-
Have undertaken their higher education primarily at educational institutions in the United States. Foreign study during the junior year or other periods of undergraduate study that are integral parts of the curricula of American institutions will not be considered a disadvantage.

Have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying within the meaning of this section.
-
For most grants, applicants who have had extensive previous foreign experience are at a disadvantage, but are not necessarily disqualified for that reason.

- Language evaluation form (if applicable). This must also be submitted on-line through the Fulbright web site.

Selection Process
- After submitting your application materials, you will be interviewed in person (or by telephone if you are unavailable in person) by members of the Fellowships and Prizes Committee. The committee completes a confidential evaluation of your proposal, which is submitted to Fulbright.
- After the interview, you will have an opportunity to make final revisions to your application before submitting it to Fulbright. The national deadline is in mid October.
- ALL applications are forwarded to Fulbright for review by its national selection committees.
- Fulbright will notify you in late January to tell you if your proposal has been "recommended" to the host country.
- If your application has been recommended, it will be reviewed by a selection committee in the host country.
- Final selections are made from March through May or June. Each country maintains its own schedule for making final decisions.
Goldwater Scholarships
Description
For outstanding sophomores or juniors who have a career interest in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. Up to 300 scholarships, distributed among the 50 states, are awarded for undergraduate college expenses up to $7,500 annually. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrated background in scientific research.
Selection Criteria

The recommendations should be from a faculty member who can discuss the nominee's potential for a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering; a faculty member in the nominee's field of study; and another individual/faculty member who can attest to the nominee's potential.
Selection Process

The Fellowships and Prizes Committee reviews all applications.

All candidates are interviewed by the Committee.

Based on application materials, interviews, and recommendations, the Committee selects four nominees. The nominees will have an opportunity to revise his or her essay prior to Goldwater's national deadline in early February.

Final selections are made in early spring.
Truman Scholarships
Description
Every year the Foundation provides 75 to 80 graduate scholarships in the amount of $30,000 for juniors preparing for careers in public service. Students must have strong leadership potential and interest in a career in government, education, uniformed services, or the not-for-profit sector. Selection is on the basis of "leadership potential, intellectual ability, and the likelihood of making a difference." Scholars may attend graduate school in the United States or abroad.

Open to juniors ONLY. (Students from Puerto Rico may also apply in their senior year.)

Candidates must be in the top quarter of their class.
