Joey's Story

#MyYUstory

Hey. I’m Joey Senders and I am third-generation YU. My grandmother was part of the first graduating class at Stern College for Women. After seeing how well my family did with their YU education, I knew it was the right path for me.

Judaism is fundamental to who I am. I was raised to keep it as the framework for everything else I do. I was placed in Rav Goldwicht’s shiur when I started at YU, and really enjoy his shiurim and unique style of teaching. Being at YU and in New York offers me so many experiences that, growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, I never had before.

I’ve been really impressed with the faculty’s personal interest in me. YU’s small class size really allows for greater interaction and mentorships between professors and students. I am Pre-Med and majoring in Economics with the goal of becoming a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, and eventually going into hospital administration. When I’m not taking chemistry or advanced economics courses, I’m traveling the country singing Jewish a cappella music. Being a member of the Maccabeats has been a dream come true. I’ve been singing since I was a kid and even performed the solo to “Candlelight” in eighth grade. I initially auditioned for the Y-Studs but my classes conflicted with their schedule.

When the Maccabeats sent out an email that they were auditioning new guys for the first time in 4 years, I was so excited. They welcomed me with open arms, and now I get to tour with them. This past December I performed in a Chanukah concert in London’s Trafalgar Square. Maximizing opportunities is what my story is all about and YU has allowed me to do that.
