M-and-HamanMORDECHAI AND HAMAN: Portions of Megillat Esther (scroll of Esther) have been depicted since Late Antiquity. One popular motif is: Haman leading a triumphal Mordechai on horseback. The passage and depiction epitomizes Haman's humiliation and Mordechai's triumph (chapter 6: 10-11.) Our scribe has captured this dramatic moment. Haman, with a look of slight disgust, leads Mordechai, who is dressed in a royal cloak and golden crown, through the broad streets of ancient Susa, which resembles a Muslim city complete with a mosque. Two court servants—one appears to be Moorish—point to the spectacle. Gilding is used throughout the drawing—most notably on the crown of Mordechai, the feathers of the servants' turbans, and the hooves of the horse.
