Steve Mayer has a BS in Accounting from Baruch College in 1981 and received his CPA license in 1983. He began his career in 1981 at Goldstein Golub Kessler LLP, and became an audit partner in 1990. His clients were predominantly privately held companies in industries such as retail, manufacturing, distribution and bio-technology. He also served numerous public companies in the bio-technology, (including R&D), distribution and manufacturing industries. He performed due diligence many times over the years, for his clients that were making acquisitions. In addition, he worked with the Litigation Support Group on several Forensic Accounting matters over the years.

In 2006, he was voted in as the Managing Partner of the firm. The firm was acquired by RSM McGladrey and Steve left in 2008 to head the New York office of Amper Politziner & Mattia. In 2010, Steve lead the due diligence team responsible for the merger with Eisner LLP. After the merger, Steve went to J.H. Cohn and headed the New York Office, responsible for 600 employees, including 40 partners, and Steve had financial responsibility and accountability for the office.

In 2012, Steve was on the due diligence team for the firm, when they were looking to merge with the Reznick Group. In 2015, Steve was promoted to Regional Managing Partner-Strategic Growth, responsible for the growth of the New York Metropolitan region, consisting of 1500 people and over 100 partners.

Steve retired from the firm in 2019. He currently teaches at various universities including Fairleigh Dickinson University, Baruch College and Yeshiva University. He teaches/taught Accounting I, Accounting II, Cost (Managerial) Accounting and Advanced Accounting at the undergraduate level. In addition, Steve has taught Auditing, Managerial Accounting and Management of an Accounting Practice at the graduate level.
