Dr. Mort Lowengrub came to Yeshiva University in the fall of 1999 as the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and in 2007 was officially made the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Dr. Lowengrub has specialized in nonlinear partial differential equations and integral equations with his research focusing on crack problems in elasticity theory; system of integral equations, double and triple integral equations, and mixed boundary value problems.

As a recognized leader in the field of mathematics, Lowengrub has received numerous honors and awards including Senior Fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the Leverhulme Foundation of Great Britain and the Science Research Council of Great Britain. He has also been recognized for his outstanding teaching with the Outstanding Teaching Award from Duke University and the Alliance Award for the Promotion of Excellence from the Alliance of Distinguished Rank Professors at Indiana University. In 1997, the International Astronomical Union recognized Lowengrubs's contributions in the planning and construction of the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope by naming an asteroid in his honor
