Quint

Alyssa Quint is Leon Charney Visiting Fellow at the Israel Studies Center at Yeshiva University where she has taught at Yeshiva College, Stern College for Women, and the Fish Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. An expert in modern Yiddish and Hebrew literature, Quint’s approach to scholarship has been one of literary and cultural history, often grounded in original archival research. Her first book The Rise of the Modern Yiddish Theater (Indiana 2019), traced the theater’s rise in late imperial Russia. Women on the Yiddish Stage (Legenda 2023), a volume she co-edited and introduced, provides a panoramic view of the Yiddish theater through the lens of its women performers and directors that contains documents and images from twenty-nine archives. A volume of plays she introduced and edited, Three Yiddish Plays by Women: Female Jewish Perspectives (1880-1920), highlights themes such as prostitution, abortion, and divorce. Recently, Quint published a translation and critical introduction to Mississippi, a Yiddish play about the Scottsboro Affair that was written and performed in Warsaw in 1935. Quint has authored many articles, including scholarly essays published in peer-reviewed journals and essays and book reviews for the general reader. She is a contributing editor of the Digital Yiddish Theater Project, an editor at Tablet Magazine, and the co-editor of a translation series called Yiddish Voices (out with YIVO and Bloomsbury). She is currently at work on a project with the working title “The Zionist Idea in Yiddish Literature.”
