Transfer B.S. in Nursing Admissions

Eligibility**

Candidates for the Transfer B.S. in Nursing must have completed at least 62 credits of undergraduate coursework (general education and nursing prerequisites) but should not yet have completed a bachelor's degree. 

*Applicants who have been dismissed from a nursing program are not eligible for admission.  

** The BS in Nursing program is not open to international students that require an F-1 visa at this time.

Admissions Requirements

Prior coursework must include the general education and nursing prerequisites below. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0. As part of the admissions review, the Katz School considers the applicant's complete academic record, including cumulative undergraduate GPA, Science GPA and Prerequisite GPA as calculated by NursingCAS. These standardized GPA measures provide a comprehensive view of an applicant's academic preparation across institutions and coursework. 

Applicants are encouraged to consult the NursingCAS Help Center for information on how NursingCAS calculates GPAs. The resource includes a GPA calculator template that can help applicants estimate their NursingCAS GPAs and assess whether retaking prerequisite or other coursework may be necessary to meet the program's admissions requirements.

TEAS Nursing Entrance Exam

The TEAS Nursing Entrance Exam is a required component of the admissions process. However, applicants are not required to take the TEAS at the time of application.

After an application has been submitted through NursingCAS, verified, and reviewed by the admissions team, applicants who meet the academic criteria for further consideration will be invited to complete the TEAS Nursing Entrance Exam. This process is designed to allow applicants to have their academic qualifications reviewed before incurring the time and expense of taking the TEAS.  Following review of the completed application and TEAS results, applicants will be notified of an admission decision.  

Applicants who have already completed the TEAS may submit a valid TEAS score with their NursingCAS application as optional documentation. A previously completed TEAS must have been taken within 2 years of applying to the program. 

Required Undergraduate Coursework

To apply, applicants must have completed a minimum of 62 undergraduate credits. You do not need to be currently enrolled at another institution. Credits completed at any point at an accredited institution are accepted, subject to the nursing prerequisite recency requirements below.  

General Education Core (33 credits)*

These general education courses must be completed before matriculating into the nursing program:  

• Communications (6 credits): 2 courses required (e.g. English Composition/Writing. Communications, Speech/Public Speaking)  
• Humanities (9 credits): 3 courses required (e.g., English Literature, Philosophy, Law, Ethics, Arts or Foreign Language)  
• Social Sciences (9 credits): 3 courses required (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Political Science, or Economics)  
• Electives (9 credits): Any accredited undergraduate coursework

*CLEP Exams (minimum score of 50) may be used for general education requirements.   

Nursing Prerequisite Coursework

A total of 29 credits of nursing prerequisite courses are required for admission to the Transfer Bachelor of Science in Nursing. All prerequisite courses must be taken with a grade of B (3.0) or better in each course. Prerequisite courses may be outstanding at the time of application but must be completed prior to beginning the program if the applicant is accepted for admission.

Required Courses Completed within 5 years of application

• Human Anatomy with lab (4 credits) (Anatomy & Physiology I and II will be accepted to satisfy this requirement)
• Human Physiology with lab (4 credits) (Anatomy & Physiology I and II will be accepted to satisfy this requirement)
• Chemistry with lab (4 credits)*
• Statistics or Biostatistics (3 credits)*
• Microbiology with lab (4 credits)

Required Courses Completed within 10 years of application

• Biology with lab (4 credits)*
• Algebra or higher mathematics course (3 credits)*
• Developmental Psychology (3 credits)

*These admission prerequisites may be satisfied by AP credits if an undergraduate institution awarded credit for them, as indicated on an official transcript. No other AP credits are accepted for admissions prerequisites or to fulfill any requirements in the Nursing program.

**The following prerequisites can also be satisfied with CLEP Exams (minimum score of 50): Biology, Algebra, Developmental Psychology.    

Selection

Competitive applicants typically demonstrate strong performance across cumulative undergraduate, science, and prerequisite GPAs, as well as the TEAS Nursing Entrance Exam. The admissions committee also considers applicants’ preparation for nursing, including relevant healthcare, volunteer, leadership and shadowing experiences. Admission decisions are based on a holistic review of the application. Applicants with outstanding prerequisite coursework may be offered conditional admission, provided all required prerequisites are completed before the start of the program. 

Transfer Credit and Advanced Standing 

Transfer credits are only accepted for general education requirements. Transfer credits in nursing are not accepted. All students must complete all of the didactic, lab and clinical elements of the nursing program.

Please note that the university requires its students to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Students attending a program with a clinical training component are subject to this policy. Medical and religious exemptions generally are not available for students in a university clinical training program due to the requirements of external clinical sites and other circumstances which would place an undue burden on the university to provide the accommodation. You should bear this in mind when applying to the program. The university will not refund any fees or other payments if you are unable to enroll or otherwise complete the program. 

Background Checks

Please note that a felony conviction or previous criminal record could affect eligibility for clinical training placement and, as a result, ability to complete the program requirements. Clinical training sites often require a background check prior to placement. Additionally, a felony conviction may affect a graduate's ability to sit for the national certification examination, as well impact eligibility to obtain state licensure.
