If you are passionate about creating meaningful experiences and enhancing life in a supportive and caring environment for the elderly or those with life-threatening illnesses, Wurzweiler’s Gerontology & Palliative Care Specialization will be of interest to you. You will develop the skills and knowledge that will lead you to a successful career while being eligible for additional scholarships.

Gerontology and Palliative Care offers students access to:

In-Demand Field: Earning the Wurzweiler Certificate in Gerontology & Palliative Care as part of your Master of Social Work program will position you for a career in one of the fastest growing and most in-demand fields of social work. While doctors and nurses are well equipped to diagnose and treat the physical and cognitive issues associated with declining health and long-term illness, well-trained geriatric and palliative social workers respond to the increasing psychosocial and behavioral health needs of patients, their families, and the community.

Care for the Community: Professionals in this area ensure that our communities get the assistance for the care of the elderly and the chronically ill by applying reliable, competent, evidence-based, and empathetic care for individuals and families at every stage of elder care, including issues related to illness, family caregiving, cognitive impairment, and end of life care. They provide referrals to community resources, offer behavioral care and counseling, and assist with the complex decisions facing families throughout the aging process and in response to serious illness.

Practice Specialization Benefits: Students who participate in this program specialize in advanced coursework, including: Palliative Care, Gerontology, Coping with Loss or Health Care in Social Work. Those students who join the program upon entering the MSW porgram would receive their field training for two full years in elder or palliative care focused field sites. Fellows would additionally benefit from the mentorship of our expert palliative care and aging faculty, supervise (with our fieldwork staff) high quality fieldwork sites, and develop other special learning opportunities.
