Adult Mental Health Services

  •  Adult Psychodynamic Therapy Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a treatment that focuses on understanding a person’s character and life history in order to provide insight into his or her problems and improve overall level of functioning. Common difficulties addressed include depression, problems with self-esteem, relationship issues, post-traumatic stress and adjustment disorders, anxiety and bereavement.
  • Adult Cognitive Behavior Therapy Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a structured, problem-focused psychotherapy in which the therapist uses specific techniques to improve the client’s well-being and overall functioning. It focuses on thought patterns, feelings and behaviors that may be causing their difficulties. This treatment is effective for depression, general anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, agoraphobia and other specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress and other stress-related disorders.
  •  Behavioral Medicine Sub-Clinic In our Behavioral Medicine sub-clinic, assistance is provided in the management of the psychological components of chronic illness and disability, in consultation with existing medical providers. Psychotherapy is available for individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, or depression related to medical problems.
  •  Sub-clinic for workers in the Food and Beverage industry. In conjunction with the Southern Smoke Foundation (SSF), the Parnes Clinic has made a commitment to helping servers, chefs, bartenders, and anyone else who works in the Food and Beverage Industry. If you qualify for this program, SSF will provide your first 20 sessions at the Parnes Clinic free of charge. Then, if you choose to continue treatment, your session fee will be determined by the same sliding scale as all other Parnes Clinic patients.
  •  Psychological Assessment (Adult) Psychological assessment is the process of using a number of sources of information such as an interview about a person’s history and current functioning, standardized cognitive testing and personality measures to gain a better understanding of the individual’s cognitive and emotional functioning, including strengths and weaknesses. Psychological assessment can also help in selecting the most effective treatment planning options, accommodations at work or school, and an understanding of one’s strengths and limitations.
  •  Psychological Affidavits for Political Asylum Seekers The Parnes Clinic has a program, which evaluates people who seeking political asylum and prepares psychological affidavits for their legal dossiers. We will work with both asylum seekers and their legal teams in order to help them prepare cases for hearings and trials.   •  Older adults (age 60+) Older adults without cognitive impairment receive specialized services including gero-psychological diagnostic evaluation, consultation/referral and individual therapy. Common problems include depression, anxiety, difficulty coping with illness or loss, relationship conflicts and social isolation. We also offer support services for individuals who are caring for their older relatives.

Child/Adolescent Mental Health Services

  • Child/Adolescent Cognitive Behavior Therapy Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an active, solution-focused type of psychotherapy that is focused on teaching youth and their families skills to modify thinking patterns, reduce negative feelings and change behaviors. It is typically goal-oriented and strives to be time limited, though length of treatment is based on therapeutic gains, so treatment can be long term if needed. CBT is effective for a range of issues including general anxiety, social anxiety, school refusal, specific phobias, selective mutism, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, oppositional defiant disorder, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children between the ages of 2 and 18 are seen within the CBT-Youth Clinic. Treatment involves setting an agenda for sessions, building and coaching of child and parent skills, home practice of skills, and family collaboration to promote change. Client progress is monitored closely in order to tailor treatment to meet the individual needs of the child and family.
  • Child/Adolescent Psychodynamic Therapy Psychodynamic psychotherapy for younger children, generally between 3 and 10, usually involves play therapy to help them explore and express their emotional worlds in order to take control of problematic behaviors. For older children and adolescents, talk therapy is used to provide understanding in order to enhance interpersonal relationships, emotional and behavioral control, and overall quality of life. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is effective in treating anxiety, depression, school problems, the aftermath of trauma, and family, interpersonal and behavioral
    problems. Support and guidance is also routinely provided for the parents and families of our child patients.
  • Psychoeducational Evaluation (Child) We offer a full range of psychological and psychoeducational evaluation services for children and adolescents, including academic, cognitive, neuropsychological and personality assessments. Evaluations cost $500, but we will work with families to ensure that our services are affordable for all who need them.

Family/Couples Mental Health Services

  • Family and Couples Therapy practice Family and Couples Therapy practice at the Parnes Clinic focuses on resolving problems related to interactions and relationships within couples and families. We help people with a wide variety of issues, including relationship building and rebuilding, adapting to marriage or remarriage, extended family concerns, coping with divorce, coping with life transitions, concerns about parenting and step-parenting, couple communication, family communication, marital and premarital issues, child behavior problems, child/teen fears and anxieties and sexual concerns.Our Services

For therapy services, we currently offer both remote and in-person options. To receive therapy services remotely, you must reside in New York State. Patient Privacy and Confidentiality

Confidentiality ensures that the information you share with your therapist, or during testing, is privileged, private, safe and secure. We repeatedly train our students in the utilization of confidentiality procedures. All staff, therapists and supervisors who work at the Parnes Clinic are required to know and practice professional guidelines related to confidentiality according to federal HIPAA guidelines. We also do everything possible to ensure that your personal information remains confidential within our clinic. All files are securely stored and are available only to your therapists, their supervisors and the clinic administrative staff on a “need-to-know” basis.
As a requirement for ongoing supervision and quality-assurance), all sessions are videorecorded using secure platforms. To receive services, all patients will be asked to provide written consent to be recorded. The American Psychological Association (APA) provides this guidance.

When you call the Parnes Clinic, or fill out a screening form online to schedule an intake appointment, we will need to know your name, age, birth date and gender. For children and teenagers (aged 2–17), a parent or legal guardian must call to schedule the appointment.

During the call, you will not be asked to go into great detail about yourself over the phone. Based on the information you provide, the clinic staff will determine whether the Parnes Clinic is the best resource to address your needs. If it appears that we are a good fit for you, you will be given an intake appointment during which we can get a more thorough understanding of your challenges, goals, and needs.
