Advanced Certificate in Jewish Studies

The Advanced Certificate in Jewish Studies is a program offered by the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies intended to provide students with a sophisticated graduate introduction to Jewish Studies, by offering a choice of four Revel courses to students interested in the field.

Advanced Certificate Program

Applications for admission to the Advanced Certificate program are considered twice a year, for the Fall and Spring semesters. Applications for Fall admission to the Advanced Certificate program by students requesting scholarships, including all supporting documents, should be submitted by the end of April. Later applications will be considered, but priority in the granting of financial aid will be given to those who file by this date. For spring admission, students should apply at least one month prior to the semester in which they wish to be admitted.

Program Goals

The Advanced Certificate in Jewish Studies provides an initial grounding in academic Jewish Studies by offering a choice of Revel courses in our various concentrations - Bible, Jewish History, Jewish Philosophy, and Talmud. The Certificate offers an introductory critical understanding of the nature and development of Judaism, as well as offering opportunities for understanding the intersection between Ancient Judaism and Christianity. The Advanced Certificate can be used by members of all faiths to enhance career opportunities for religious communal leaders, high school teachers, and also potentially act as a gateway to the MA in Jewish Studies for students who wish to pursue their interests further.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or university and have a grade point average of at least B (3.0). Academic background should

include documented evidence of a Hebrew proficiency adequate for the required readings. In the absence of such evidence, a Hebrew reading test may be required as part of the admission process. Those entering without Hebrew Proficiency will be unable to take those courses that require such proficiency.

Residence Requirement

All 12 credits must be taken at Revel.

Administrative Requirement

• Approbation of the faculty and president
• Filing an Application for Graduation during the registration period of the semester in which the student completes all requirements

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Students are required to complete their degree within two years. All course assignments must be completed within a semester and summer of the completion of a course, though faculty may require more timely submission. Students who have enrolled in 6 credits during their graduate careers must have completed at least 50% successfully in order to remain in good standing. Withdrawals, even without penalty, count in this calculation. Students who have enrolled in 9 credits must have completed at least 67% successfully. To remain in good standing after the completion of 9 credits, a student must have maintained a grade point average of 3.0.

Progress will be reviewed annually.

Students who have taken a leave or otherwise experienced special circumstances may request an extension of these deadlines. Students granted such an extension should contact the Office of Student Finance to determine their eligibility for governmen
