Stern College Metropolitan Experience Brings Students, Faculty Together - With a Dose of Fun, Too

Sep 22, 2004 -- What started four years ago as an attempt for Stern College for Women students to get to know New York City, each other, and their professors, the Metropolitan Experience is now one of Stern’s most popular programs. With more than 50 percent of students signing up each year, the program allows students to interact with faculty in a personal, informal setting that exposes them to New York City’s cultural events. “Students learn about faculty as people – their life, their work, their research,” said Zelda Braun, associate dean of students. “And because students are selected by a lottery system, they generally do not know each other and have an opportunity to meet peers from different backgrounds and life experiences.” Dean Braun said the idea for the Metropolitan Experience came about after a conversation with a student who suggested a community-building program. Both Karen Bacon, PhD, the Monique C. Katz Dean of Stern, and Dr. Efrem Nulman, senior university dean of students, supported the idea. A student committee suggests events that typically include trips to the opera, the ballet, the symphony, and Broadway, to pottery painting and restaurant dining. At the beginning of each semester, students sign up for three events and a lottery drawing is held. This year’s lottery takes place on Thursday, Oct. 14. Sophomore Leora Ross attended the opera event last spring with Joseph Luders, assistant professor of political science. She enjoyed the experience so much that she is taking “The Rise of the Modern American Presidency” this fall, taught by Dr. Luders. “The Metropolitan Experience is a great way to see New York without having to spend a lot of money,” she said. “And you get to meet a lot of other students.” Fall 2004 Metropolitan Experience Events are: Dinner at Haikara Grill Dinner at Abigael’s Pottery Painting at Our Name is Mud “The Lion King” Classic Trios at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center “The Marriage of Figaro” at the New York City Opera “Wicked” “Cinderella” at the New York City Opera Peter Serkin at The New York Philharmonic Dinner at Darna Dinner at Va Bene
