RIETS To Pay Tribute to Four Distinguished Roshei Kollel at May 5 Dinner in NYC

Apr 15, 2004 -- Yeshiva University’s affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary will celebrate advanced Torah scholarship by paying tribute to its four distinguished roshei kollel at a dinner on Wednesday evening, May 5, 2004. The Eitz Chaim (Tree of Life) Award, the highest honor RIETS can bestow, will be presented at the dinner to Jewish communal leader Carmi Schwartz. The event, at the Grand Hyatt in New York City, will begin with Torah presentations at 5 p.m. by the roshei kollel: Rabbi J. David Bleich, Rabbi Michael Rosensweig, Rabbi Hershel Schachter, and Rabbi Mordechai I. Willig. A reception will begin at 6 p.m. and the dinner at 7 p.m. Rabbi Bleich is rosh kollel of the Rabbi Norman Lamm Kollel Le’Hora’ah and the Ludwig Jesselson Kollel Chaverim and holds the Herbert and Florence Tenzer Chair in Jewish Law and Ethics at RIETS. Rabbi Rosensweig is rosh kollel of the Israel Henry Beren Institute for Higher Talmudic Studies and holds the Nathan and Perel Schupf Chair in Talmud. Rabbi Schachter is rosh kollel of the Adina and Marcos D. Katz Kollel and holds the Nathan and Vivian Fink Distinguished Professorial Chair in Talmud at RIETS. Rabbi Willig is rosh kollel of the Bella and Harry Wexner Kollel Elyon and holds the Rabbi Sol Roth Chair in Talmud and Contemporary Halakhah at RIETS. Carmi Schwartz will become the ninth recipient of the Eitz Chaim Award and inductee into the Tree of Life Society. Mr. Schwartz has devoted his lengthy career to serving the Jewish community, both as a professional and a lay leader. A former executive vice president of the Council of Jewish Federations, he is executive vice chairman of the Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology of the Hebrew University, executive vice chairman of the reconstituted Beth Din of America, and a consultant to Jewish Federations, Touro College and other institutions of higher education.
