Wurzweiler School of Social Work Announces Two Post-Master’s Degree Programs

Dr. Danielle Wozniak
The Wurzweiler School of Social Work has announced two new post-master’s degree programs designed to prepare graduate degree holders for Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) eligibility. The programs will offer experienced professionals the high-level education and preparation necessary to provide specialized care to clients with addictions. “The devastating pandemic of substance and alcohol abuse in America is one of the most urgent health care and social issues of our day,” said Dr. Danielle Wozniak, vice provost and the Dorothy and David I. Schachne Dean of Wurzweiler. “At Wurzweiler, we strongly believe that social workers can play a crucial role in helping those struggling with this issue and healing our fractured world.” Individuals holding an MSW degree may earn the training hours needed for CASAC eligibility in New York with as few as 100 hours (85 for Knowledge and 15 for Ethics), while individuals holding a different but relevant master’s degree may earn the training hours needed for CASAC eligibility in New York with as few as 130 hours (85 for Knowledge and 45 for Ethics). Both programs will begin in January 2021 and are designed to meet the credentialing requirements for practicing in the field of addiction, including alcohol, opioid, and other substance use disorders. Participants will complete training hours online with the opportunity to engage with professors and other classmates in classes capped at 12 students through interactive online discussion boards. “There is a critical workforce shortage of qualified professionals in the field of addictions, with the need for CASAC professionals continuously growing, especially in urban areas and with minority populations,” said Dr. Tim Conley, the director of the MSW/CASAC and the new post-master’s CASAC programs. “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 25% increase in jobs for the addictions field, and dually credentialed professionals are highly sought after and valued members of the practice community. Wurzweiler’s new CASAC programs are preparing social workers who can meet that demand.” More information about the CASAC programs can be found on the Wurzweiler website.
