More than 500 Celebrate YU High Schools at Annual Dinner of Tribute

On May 16th, Yeshiva University High Schools celebrated its annual Dinner of Tribute at Congregation Ahavath Torah in Englewood, NJ. Honorees included Harvey and Deena Wrubel, YU  Benefactors and pillars of the Teaneck Jewish community; Rabbi Tanchum Cohen, a popular maggid shiur at YUHSB and the founding rebbe of the school’s Beis Medresh Katan Program; and Rabbi Zvi Lew, the Israel Guidance Adviser at YUHSG, who also teaches 10th grade chumash and 11th grade kashruth/halakha, advises YUHSG’s Torah Bowl team, and delivers a regular Friday shiur to returning alumni. Over 550 people participated as YU High Schools honored the Wrubels by dedicating and naming YUHSB’s Beis Medresh Katan Program in memory of Harvey’s father, Mr. Julius Wrubel z”l. The evening featured a performance by the YUHSB band led by Musical Director David Ross; a performance of Steel Magnolias by YUHSG students; tribute videos for both Rabbis Lew and Cohen by their students; and a moving tribute to Julius Wrubel z”l. Harvey Wrubel’s acceptance speech concluded with a touching and heartfelt standing ovation for his mother, Blanche Wrubel. Rabbi Josh Joseph, Vice President of YU, remarked that this year’s incoming MTA freshmen are set to graduate in the school’s 100th year, as the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy (YUHSB) - North America’s oldest Jewish high school - is approaching its centennial in 2015. Rabbi Joseph, who is a son-in-law of Marsha Stern a”h, declared, “My special connection to the high schools goes beyond my professional responsibilities. I take great pride in all of the wonderful achievement of the high schools, and I know my mother-in-law would share my sentiments.” The dinner raised significant funds for YU High Schools, boosted in part by an anonymous 100 percent matching gift for all monies donated to the dinner, and was one of the most successful in recent years. Rounding out the evening was the Inaugural YU High Schools Dinner Raffle which gave away a total of $10,000 to 4 lucky winners - all current parents of students in the High Schools.
