Yeshiva University to Offer Unique Sunday Learning Opportunity for Women

Feb 1, 2005 -- Yeshiva University (YU) will offer women of all ages, Jewish backgrounds, and educational levels the opportunity to participate in Torah learning on Sunday mornings with YU’s most renowned roshei yeshiva (professors of Talmud) and other prominent Jewish scholars. The Midreshet Yom Rishon series for women will begin on Sunday, February 6 at YU’s Wilf Campus in Washington Heights, home of the university’s affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS). The program will parallel the successful Kollel Yom Rishon for men, a series that began in October to accommodate working people who want to learn during the weekend. Kollel Yom Rishon draws approximately 70 to 80 participants each Sunday from across the tri-state area. “This new initiative for women illustrates YU’s ongoing commitment to enhancing life and learning for the entire Jewish community,” said Yeshiva University President Richard M. Joel. Midreshet Yom Rishon will take place at the Schenk Synagogue in Schottenstein Center, where participants will receive and review material to prepare for a shiur (lecture) that follows. Among the lecturers for the series are RIETS rabbis and other Jewish scholars including Rabbi Hershel Schachter, Prof. Michelle Levine, Rabbi Zvi Sobolofsky, Prof. Smadar Rozenswieg, Rabbi Mordechai Willig, Rebbetzin Peshi Neuburger, Rabbi Menachem Genack, and Prof. Naomi Grunhaus. The program will commence with a light breakfast at 9 am in Schottenstein Center, located at West 185th Street, between Audubon and Amsterdam Avenues. The first shiur will begin at 9:30 am, followed by a second shiur at 10:30 am. The program will conclude at 11:30 am. No registration is required and there is no fee for participating. Courtesy parking will be available in Yeshiva University’s parking lots. For more information, contact midreshetyomrishon@yu.edu or call 212-960-5266. Please visit www.midreshetyomrishon.org to download learning materials for each shiur and to view the weekly schedule of speakers.
