Rabbi Mendelson's Shiur Spends Shabbos in YU

by Kovi Diament ('16) and Avi Rothwachs ('16)
This past weekend, Rabbi Mendelson's shiurhad the opportunity to stay in MTA and experience YU over Shabbos. Every year before each large test, Rabbi Mendelson's shiur, along with Rabbi Mendelson and his family, stay in the MTA dorms over the weekend, daveningand having Shabbos seudos with the YU students who are in for the weekend. This Shabbos was a truly great experience because a Shabbos in YU is a Shabbos one cannot experience anywhere else, for one simple reason. Where else can you look up from your seat in the Beis Medrash and see not one, not two, not three, but FOUR outstanding, famous Torah personalities? The shiur had the privilege to say "Good Shabbos" to Rav Elchanan Adler, Rav Yosef Blau, Rav Yitzchok Cohen, and Rav Hershel Schachter, all after davening on Friday night! Later Friday night, after Kabbalas Shabbos/Maariv, the first seudah, and some learning in YU's Glueck Beis Medrash, the shiur had an Oneg Shabbos and heard an inspiring dvar Torah from YU Rosh Yeshiva Rav Yitzchak Cohen. On Shabbos morning, after davening with the Yeshiva, the boys enjoyed a shiurorganized kiddush, more review for Rabbi Mendelson's bechinah, and Shabboslunch in the YU Dining Hall. The afternoon featured further learningbechavrusa until Minchah, which was followed by Seudah Shelishis in YU and then Maariv. After Shabbos ended, some students went home, while others stayed overnight for additional review prior to the test that Sunday morning. When the test finally arrived Sunday morning, the whole shiur realized the impact which this Shabbos had on our learning in general and our knowledge of the material for this bechinah in particular. The whole shiur is looking forward to our next Shabbos in YU before our next big test.
