Keeping Faith in the Workplace

Being Orthodox in a Non-Orthodox World On a blustery cold evening on February 25, 2019, over 120 young professionals attended a recent symposium hosted by YUConnects in conjunction with the annual Seforim Sale. “A Jew in the Workplace” focused on common situations that affect the Orthodox Jew in a non Jewish workplace environment. It was open to the community, organized in collaboration with the Orthodox Union, and geared for singles in their 20s and 30s. Moderated by Suzy Schwartz, assistant vice president of alumni affairs and strategic development, the panel consisted of Rabbi Daniel Feldman, Rosh Yeshiva [dean of the school] at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS); Joel Strauss of Kaplan Fox and Kilsheimer LLP; and Leah Gottfried, an actress and director of the popular “Soon by You” webseries.

The questions posed ranged from pointed halachic [concerning Jewish law] queries like "Are all coffees kosher?" to more nuanced scenarios relating to best ways to bring up Shabbos in a job interview. The animated crowd was clearly interested and audience questions abounded. “What I liked the best,” commented one attendee, “was that they offered personal anecdotes and the panelists certainly experienced many of the same issues that I face.” The participants also appreciated the opportunity to speak directly to the panelists afterwards and obtain personalized career guidance. As typical with all YUConnects events, the men and women were able to meet each other in a comfortable environment. Not only were sushi and snacks provided, but a short trivia quiz allowed people to form their own groups and even compete to win gourmet chocolate prizes. Facilitators and matchmakers from YUConnects were present to informally meet those that were interested. And while most people socialized for quite a while after the symposium, there was still time to run across Amsterdam Avenue to shop at the busy Seforim Sale. YUConnects just celebrated its 350th engagement, connecting 700 happy individuals. It is self-funded, open to the entire Jewish community and offers special educational programs and discounts for Yeshiva University students. A Bergen County Benefit Evening for parents and community members on March 9, 2019, in Teaneck will feature Rabbi Larry Rothwachs, director of professional rabbinics at RIETS.
