Yeshiva University President Richard Joel To Visit Deerfield Community

Feb 5, 2009 -- Yeshiva University (YU) President Richard M. Joel will visit the Deerfield Beach community over the weekend of February 13-15. The trip, one of many national stops on the president’s schedule, will focus on delivering YU’s message to the broader American Jewish community. President Joel will meet with alumni, religious and lay leaders; speak to local synagogues and high school students; and offer support to South Florida’s Center for Jewish Leadership and Learning (CJLL)—a community partnership with YU’s Center for the Jewish Future (CJF). “There is something both magical and momentous about President Joel engaging in conversation with our community,” said Rabbi David Gutterman, executive director of the CJLL and senior community scholar, CJF. “He is a Jewish leader who is nationally and internationally recognized as a keen observer of Jewish life, transformer of Jewish institutions, and a visionary builder.” The president’s message to the community will center on the importance of Jewish education and will call on parents, students, and members of the community to take action in a new age of responsibility. The president will be joined by CJF dean, Rabbi Kenneth Brander, Rabbi Emeritus of Boca Raton Synagogue (BRS). Rabbi Brander will be attending various community meetings with the president and will also serve as scholar-in-residence at BRS, celebrating the synagogue’s 25th anniversary. President Joel will address the Young Israel of Deerfield Beach on Thursday, February 12 at 8 PM on the subject of “Keeping the Covenant Alive: The Importance of Ethical Education.” The president will spend Shabbat at Beth David Highland Lake Synagogue in Aventura and will be the featured speaker at an alumni gathering at the Boca Raton Museum of Art on Saturday, February 14 at 8:30 PM. He will speak about “Higher Education Anchored in Sacred Values” followed by a Q & A session with alumni.
