Dr. Levine Publishes Two Articles

Portrait of Dr. Michelle LevineDr. Michelle J. Levine, associate professor of Bible at Stern College for Women, has published two articles for the Mesorah Matrix Series, edited by David Birnbaum and Martin S. Cohen. In volume 9 of the series, Ehyeh asher Ehyeh [“I Will Be That Which I Will Be”], Dr. Levine examines the far-reaching ramifications of this divine epithet, as it appears for the first time in the scene of the burning bush in Exodus 3. She analyzes how this divine appellation epitomizes the perpetual presence of God’s providence, even and especially in times of exile and suffering, when Israel needs reassurance that the Divine has not abandoned them. In volume 10 of the series, V'shamru [The Sabbath], Dr. Levine explores the deeper significance of Israel's exclusive commandment to observe [shamor] the Sabbath, in relation to the first appearance of this verb, when Adam is commanded to guard [shamor] the Garden of Eden. The relationship between the observance of the Sabbath and the purpose for creation is expanded upon, thus eliciting the importance of the Sabbath for setting the tone for the rest of the weekly routine.
