Gary Stein, professor at Wurzweiler School of Social Work and vice chair of the Social Work Hospice & Palliative Care Network, recently published two articles in the field. “Social Work Involvement in Advance Care Planning: Findings from a Large Survey of Social Workers in Hospice and Palliative Care Settings,” co-authored with John G. Cagle and Grace H. Christ, appeared in the March 2017 issue of the Journal of Palliative Medicine. The authors conducted a large web-based survey of social workers employed in hospice, palliative care, and related settings to explore their role, participation, and self-rated competency in facilitating advance care planning (ACP) discussions. They concluded that “social workers are prominently involved in facilitating, leading, and documenting ACP discussions. Policy-makers, administrators, and providers should incorporate the vital contributions of social work professionals in policies and programs supporting ACP.” In the book Palliative and Supportive Care (2017), Stein and co-author Cathy Berkman discussed “Palliative and end-of-life care in the masters of social work curriculum.” They investigated course content on palliative care offered in MSW programs in the United States and Canada. Of the 105 participating programs, only 10 had courses dedicated to palliative care; few programs had plans to develop a dedicated course. There were 106 courses in 63 MSW programs with some content on palliative care. Stein and his colleagues concluded that “curricula are needed for preparing MSW graduates for specialty hospice and palliative care practice and non-specialty practice.”
