Shires Presents Holocaust Workshop

Dr. Linda M. Shires, professor and chair of English at Stern College for Women, gave a three-hour workshop for graduate students, teachers and the public, titled “The Holocaust in Contemporary Culture: An Interdisciplinary Inquiry.” Organized by Syracuse University on October 27, the lecture examined relationships among poetry, painting, museum architecture and graphic novels to highlight central themes in Holocaust representation and interdisciplinary connections in the arts. It is part of a series of annual events sponsored by the Spector/Warren Holocaust Education fund which train Syracuse students to teach the Holocaust and genocide. The lecture was also the inaugural event for “The Regional Holocaust and Genocide Initiative: Resistance, Resilience and Responsibility,”  a Chancellor Nancy Cantor Leadership Project with additional funding from the Ziering family to support a professional development certificate in Holocaust and genocide education for New York State in-service teachers.
