Central Celebrates Israel

yomhazikaron"Central" to the mission of Yeshiva University High School for Girls is the commitment to Medinat Yisrael and to instilling a love of the country and its people in the student body. After morning davening on Yom HaZikaron, Mashgiach Ruchani Rabbi Josh Goller shared a story about a particular fallen soldier, communicating the special mitzvah he exhibited of sacrificing his life al kiddush Hashem. Throughout the day, students stopped by the “Remembrance Wall” in the lobby. Assembled by Ms. Rebecca Konigsberg and Ms. Leah Moskovich, the full-day exhibit featured pictures and bios of Israeli soldiers who fell in the line of duty. The school-wide tekes that afternoon opened with a video about Har Herzel and a moment of silence. The students and faculty were then privileged to hear from Central parent Mr. Dror Zar. In an interview with Rabbi Elie Weissman, Mr. Zar recounted his experiences as a lone soldier in the IDF and expressed his pride in his daughter Maya (‘17), who plans to enlist in the fall. Maya briefly shared with us how she arrived at this admirable decision. Each grade then took a “tour” of Israel with a “passport” in hand, stopping to learn about "Israel in Technology," "Israel in Science," "Israel in Jewish History," and "Israel in Tanakh. Everyone enjoyed the annual “Israel Through the Arts” showcase from the performing arts clubs. A special yaasher koach to Mrs. Ofira Bashiry and Mrs. Naomi Bennun for choreographing and teaching a Daglanut to their sophomores, who exec uted the dance to perfection; and for developing a beautiful dance with the Israeli Culture Club, led by Eden Lavi (‘17) and Tohar Tsadok (‘17). The celebration then moved outside for an Israeli-style lunch before the student body split into four city-themed teams for Maccabiah 2017. Thank you to Ms. Leah Moskovich and the whole programming team for a fantastic celebration!
