“Trauma and Disaster” students learn from The American Red Cross

One of the foremost humanitarian organizations brought some of its experience to the social work classroom this week. Ms. Catherine Lague and Dr. Georgine Gorra of The American Red Cross met with Wurzweiler School of Social Work students on February 8th. The women were invited as guest presenters for the school’s  “Trauma and Disaster” course by its instructor Dr. Jerry Streets, the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Professor in Pastoral Counseling. Ms. Lague, Assistant Director, and Dr. Gorra, a disaster mental health leader, reviewed the work of their organization and how to prepare and response to disaster. They also discussed how to understand the mental health care needs of those victimized by disaster.  Some of the members of the class plan to receive more training from the Red Cross as volunteers as a result of hearing the Red Cross specialists, and to incorporate their learning in their work as social workers.
