On May 4, 2022, the Office of Student Life organized the annual Tekes Ma’avar, a meaningful and inspiring program in honor of Yom Hazikaron (Israel’s Memorial Day). Beginning with a somber commemoration of fallen IDF soldiers and terror victims, Meyer Blum, Joey Sanford and Lior Morgenstern, current students who are also veterans of the IDF, spoke about their experiences, and Rabbi Yosef Blau, senior Mashgiach Ruchani, recited words of tehillim [psalms]. Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University, addressed the audience, followed by internationally known singer Ira Heller leading the Kel Maleh prayer and Tefillah L’chayalim [prayer for soldiers], a keynote speech by Rabbi Elli Fischer, chief editor and translator of Rabbi Eliezer Melamed’s Peninei Halakha in English, and a video testimonial by Miriam Peretz that shared her inspiring story of loss and resilience. Many consider Peretz, the 2018 Israel Prize winner, the “Mother of Israel.” The festivities continued with the singing of the national anthem and the Hatikvah, a festive Maariv led by student Mordy Blau, and a celebratory dance with live music at the Max Stern Athletic Center honoring Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day.
