Yeshiva University to Host 17th Annual Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament

Feb 28, 2008 -- 18 Teams from Across the United States and Canada to Compete for Prestigious Tournament Championship from March 27-31 February 28, 2007 -- New York, NY – The 17th annual Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament is coming to Yeshiva University (YU) from March 27-31, 2008. The event, considered the most prestigious Jewish high school basketball tournament in North America, will feature 18 teams from all across the United States, and will be held YU’s Max Stern Athletic Center, located on its Wilf Campus in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. Some games will be played at the Torah Academy of Bergen County. The qualifying round games will take place on March 27 and games will be broadcast live at www.macslive.com. “The Sarachek tournament gives yeshiva high school players an opportunity to dream of playing in the big leagues,” said Michael Kranzler, YU director of undergraduate admissions. “It also provides high school students from diverse backgrounds with the opportunity to meet and compete with their counterparts.” The Yeshiva University High School for Boys/Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy will host the tournament and players will spend Shabbat together off-campus with YU administrators. Bernard “Red” Sarachek became the fifth Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Yeshiva University in 1942, and during the 1942-43 season, he led YU to a 10-5 record. After taking a hiatus from Yeshiva during the 1943-44 and 1944-45 seasons, Sarachek returned to the Yeshiva sideline for the 1945-46 season, and remained there for 24 seasons, winning a total of 202 games. During his historic tenure as Head Coach at Yeshiva, Sarachek became renowned as one of the greatest basketball minds in the country, developing strategies and techniques used by college and professional coaches today. The Red Sarachek Tournament was established in 1992 as a way for Jewish high school basketball teams to meet at YU, and was named after Sarachek to honor his accomplishments and contributions to both the sport and the Jewish community. Students from across the country are able to encounter their colleagues in an informal setting while getting a taste of life and culture at the nation’s premier Jewish university. Since the inception of the tournament, nine different schools have been crowned champions, including Young Israel of Century City (Los Angeles, CA), who defeated Ida Crown Jewish Academy (Chicago, IL) to win the 2007 championship. Other participating high schools include: Yeshiva Atlanta; Yavneh Dallas; Ida Crown Jewish Academy; Hebrew High School of New England; Weinbaum Yeshiva High School; Maimonides School; Chicagoland Jewish High School; Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy; Hillel Academy High School for Boys (Pittsburgh); Yeshiva University of Los Angeles; Akiva Hebrew Day School (Detroit); Valley Torah; MTA, Ramaz, Rav Teitz Mesivta Academy, Torah Academy of Bergen County and Hebrew Academy of Nassau County.
