On Tuesday March 2, 2021, the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Honors Program at Yeshiva College welcomed Eugene Volokh, UCLA School of Law’s Gary T. Schwartz Distinguished Professor of Law to its weekly Honors speaker series.
Prof. Volokh, a preeminent constitutional law scholar, delivered the lecture, “The Free Exercise of Religion: COVID Shutdowns and Beyond,” which discussed freedom of religion in the United States.
During his talk, he provided an overview of the judicial and statutory evolution of religious protections and discussed New York State’s recent controversial decision to limit access to places of worship during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session with the students. “It was a privilege to hear Prof. Volokh's masterful lecture on such a timely issue, and his YU baseball cap was the cherry on top!” remarked Charlie Kramer ’22YC.
“The students were fascinated by Prof. Volokh’s insights and observations,” said Dr. Eliezer Schnall, director of the Honors Program. “We are so thankful to him for making the time to speak with our Honors students and look forward to hosting distinguished and highly accomplished speakers like Prof. Volokh in the future.”
