Dec 2, 2008
-- Lata K. McGinn, director of the clinical program and associate professor of psychology at Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, was appointed a Beck Scholar by the Beck Institute of Cognitive Therapy and Research. Founded in 1994 by Dr. Aaron T. Beck, the founder of cognitive therapy, and Dr. Judith Beck, its director, the Beck Institute of Cognitive Therapy and Research provides international training in cognitive therapy for health and mental health professionals and educators at all levels of experience and expertise. The Beck Scholar Program, initiated in 1998, recognizes individuals who have made and will continue to make a significant contribution to the field of cognitive therapy. Every year the institute names between three to six Beck Scholars, which reflects a level of academic accomplishment in the field of cognitive behavior therapy. Scholars are chosen from around the world and are invited to three meetings at the institute the year they are appointed. They are invited to present a lecture at one of the meetings and are given access to the institute’s training resources. Of the six appointees this year, Dr. McGinn was the only New Yorker and one of three Americans appointed. “I am delighted that Dr. McGinn is being recognized and honored for her contributions to the field of cognitive behavioral therapy,” said Lawrence Siegel, dean of Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. “We are fortunate to have her on the faculty here at Ferkauf so that our students can benefit from her expertise.” Dr. McGinn, who earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Fordham University in 1993, also directs the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Training Program for Anxiety and Depressive Disorders at Ferkauf. The Manhattan resident specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy of anxiety, stress and depressive disorders and has been treating these problems and conducting research since 1986. Dr. McGinn is a founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and is on the executive board of the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy and the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Dr. McGinn was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy in recognition of her professional contributions made following September 11th, 2001.
