Twenty-Fifth Annual Sarachek Invitational Basketball Tournament Brings 20 Yeshiva High Schools Together for Thrilling Competition
Yeshiva University’s milestone 25th Annual Red Sarachek Invitational Basketball Tournament finished off with a bang on Monday as the Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva High School (DRS) Wildcats of Woodmere, New York, beat out the Shalhevet High School Firehawks of Los Angeles, California, to win the tournament’s championship game 47 to 32, capping off a perfect season.
More than 20 yeshiva high school teams from across North America took part in the annual tournament—named for the legendary Bernard “Red” Sarachek, YU’s former longtime men’s basketball coach—from March 10-14.
Israel’s first-ever Ambassador of Goodwill, Jewish Hall of Fame athlete Tal Brody, paid tribute to Coach Sarachek and spoke to students and fans during the tournament. Sarachek also included a lively Shabbaton and tours of the University’s campus to provide young all-stars with an inside look at YU’s unique educational environment and culture.
“Where else but at Yeshiva University can Jewish teens from communities throughout North America enjoy each other's company and play serious basketball in a strong Jewish environment?” said Rabbi Kenneth Brander, vice president for university and community life at YU.
Other participating schools this year included Abraham Joshua Heschel School (New York, NY); Atlanta Jewish Academy (Atlanta, GA); Cooper Yeshiva High School (Memphis, TN); Fuchs Mizrachi School (Cleveland, OH); Hebrew Academy of Montreal (Montreal, Canada); Ida Crown Jewish Academy (Chicago, IL); Kohelet Yeshiva High School (Philadelphia, PA); Maimonides School (Brookline, MA); Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy (Miami, FL); Rambam Mesivta (Lawrence, NY); Robert M.
