Cardozo Board Elects Kathryn O. Greenberg Chairman - First Cardozo Graduate to Ascend to Position

Mar 8, 2004 -- Kathryn O. Greenberg, Esq. was unanimously elected chairman of the board of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University at a meeting held early in March. She succeeds Earle I. Mack, who held the position since 1992. This marks the first time in Cardozo’s history that the chairman comes from the ranks of its alumni. Ms. Greenberg is a 1982 cum laude graduate of the law school. In accepting the position, Ms. Greenberg said, “I look forward to working with Dean Rudenstine and the Cardozo board to continue Earle’s marvelous legacy of propelling Cardozo into the top tier of nationally ranked law schools. I’m especially eager to energize my fellow alumni and bring their strengths and experience to the Cardozo community.” Mr. Mack, who resigned to pursue new challenges that will take him away from New York, presented Ms. Greenberg with a gavel, a symbolic gesture to ensure her strength and success in achieving her ambitions. Dean David Rudenstine, Ms. Greenberg’s former professor, said, “Kathy’s election is a wonderful sign of Cardozo’s coming of age. She graduated with the school’s fourth class and now is chairman of its board. She brings to this position extraordinary insight, a passion for the school, and personal experience that enriches our ambitions and goals. I know that her leadership, warmth, and determination will have great impact on Cardozo’s future.” Ms. Greenberg, who following graduation from Cardozo, joined the firm of Shea & Gould and served as a supervising attorney at Cardozo’s Bet Tzedek Legal Services Clinic. She also attended the Master of Laws program in taxation at New York University. In 1990, she founded the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) to provide free civil legal services for low-income New Yorkers who would otherwise be unable to afford legal help. Today, NYLAG is a full-service, not-for-profit law firm. Ms. Greenberg, who lives in New York City with her husband, Alan C. Greenberg, was born in Minnesota, attended the University of Minnesota, and graduated with honors from the University of Colorado in 1968 with a BA in art history. In addition to being honorary chairman of the board of NYLAG, she is a life trustee of the Hospital for Special Surgery, sits on the advisory board of the women’s committee of the Central Park Conservancy, and is active in other charitable activities. Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law is well known for its prolific and high-profile faculty as well as top-ranked programs in intellectual property, alternative dispute resolution, corporate and criminal law, entertainment and communications law, legal theory, and Jewish law. The law school’s clinical program has been cited as one of the best in the country. Cardozo has graduated nearly 8,000 students since its founding in 1976.
