Cardozo Auction Surpasses Fundraising Goal for Students Working in Public Service Summer Jobs

Apr 9, 2008 -- “Open your hearts and your wallets!” was the rallying cry at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law’s 16th annual Public Service Auction held on April 3. A capacity crowd filled the lobby and enjoyed live rock music, great food, and a silent auction of items including tickets to sporting events and Broadway shows, beauty treatments, and sports club packages. This year the auction raised $335,000, $75,000 more than last year and $35,000 more than their goal. Every year, the enthusiastic participation of students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends help make this evening the school’s most popular event. This year, the Public Interest Law Students Association (PILSA), which organized the auction, surpassed its goal of money raised. The live auction proceeded at a fast pace, thanks to the humorous and professional Sotheby’s auctioneer, Eliza Osborne. Second-year student Matthew Schneider took over the auction when the faculty items came up for bid and managed to bring in high dollars for dinner with Dean David Rudenstine and lunch with Prof. Barry C. Scheck, co-director of the Innocence Project. The highest bid of $6,000 went for two tickets to the MTV Video Music Awards and for domestic travel on JetBlue Airlines. Other fun items included dinner for four with the firemen of Engine 5—purchased by the Cardozo Alumni Affairs Office—and the Giants owners’ box seats. The energy and goodwill of the event will result in stipend funding for Cardozo students to work in unpaid summer jobs in the public and not-for-profit sector in summer 2008. The success of the evening is also a reflection of the leadership of Kathryn Greenberg, chair of the law school’s Board, who advocated for students, solicited donations, encouraged her colleagues to participate, and donated gifts including dinner at the exclusive restaurant Rao’s. Other major supporters include the David Berg Foundation, Cardozo’s Floersheimer Center for Constitutional Democracy, the Lincy Foundation, and Shari E. Redstone.
