Belz School Presents “The Cantor As Composer: Treasures of Viennese Liturgical Music” March 18

Mar 16, 2004 -- The Philip and Sarah Belz School of Jewish Music, in cooperation with the Yeshiva University Museum, will present “The Cantor As Composer: Treasures of Viennese Liturgical Music,” on Thursday, March 18, at 7 pm. The concert will be held at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street in Manhattan, and will feature the Belz School Choral Ensemble, conducted by Cantor Eric S. Freeman, with guest soloists Cantors Seymour Rockoff of Harrisburg, PA and Moshe Weiss of Atlantic Beach, NY. Cantor Bernard Beer, director of Belz, will provide introductory and explanatory comments framing the social, musical, and liturgical contexts in which the Jewish musical life of Vienna flourished and he will also provide background to the work and life of Solomon Sulzer, the most prominent Jewish composer of the time. This concert is one in a series of lectures and musical programs featured this year, highlighting the 50th Anniversary of the Belz School of Jewish Music (1954-2004).
