MTA Scores Multiple Wins in Novice Debate

by Yosef Lemel ('17) In the lead-up to the Great Debate, the novices of the debate team competed against Ezra Academy on Tuesday evening. The resolution was "The Electoral College should be abolished." The founding fathers originally debated over the voting system and reached the compromise of the Electoral College. However, most Americans take issue with this system nowadays. Smaller states get more electoral votes in proportion to population than larger states. Many also claim that the Electoral College goes against the will of the American people. The Electoral College has disagreed with the popular vote in the presidential election twice in the past 20 years. The proponents of the Electoral College have legitimate points too, one being that its abolition will dismantle federalism. Federalism is the concept that America is a collection of states. Having the results of the election decided purely by popular vote would take power away from the states, which would go against the original idea of the United States of America. The result of the debate was an overall win for MTA, as well as many more wins in individual debates than Ezra Academy. Avi Daskel ('19) was awarded with first place in the individual category. This debate was Avi's first debate of the year, having just joined the club last week! Second place novice debater was Elon Wolfset ('19) who also had a commendable performance. First place team was Elan Wolfset and Mordechai Schwartz ('19). Coming in second was David Brodskiy ('19) and Avi Zarour ('19), who was notified that he would be participating shortly before the debate began and improvised in that short amount of time to put up a solid performance with his partner. Congratulations to all novice debaters, who exceeded expectations. We hope to be seeing more MTA wins this Sunday at the Great Debate!
