Rabbi Jonathan Sacks Speaks About Pesach

by Amiel Katz ('16)
This week at MTA, the students got the tremendous chance to hear from Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth. The entire school met in Lamport Auditorium where Rabbi Taubes introduced him as one of the most influential rabbinic leaders and sought after speakers in the Jewish world today. Rabbi Sacks addressed the students about the upcoming holiday of Pesach.  He began by noting that the Jewish people, who were the lowly slaves to the Egyptians, were able to outlive the great Egyptian empire. That empire ultimately crumbled while their slaves are still around today celebrating yetzias mitzrayim every year. Rabbi Sacks attributed this to the great emphasis placed by Moshe Rabbeinu on education and training the future generations in his very first speech to the Jews as they prepared to leave Egypt. He also explained whychessed is such a basic part of our religious behavior.    We are very thankful to Rabbi Sacks for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to us and we hope that he will visit again soon.
