Pollack Publishes Article

Pollack_newPic_300Daniel Pollack, professor at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, recently published “Rethink the Label Insular Communities When Referring to Child Abuse” in APSAC Advisor, the journal of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. In the piece, Pollack argues that because of the pejorative connotations of the word “insular” in the phrase “insular community,” researchers should search for a better term to capture the social dynamics of these groups when discussing child abuse. He suggests that it would be better to use something like “tight-knit,” which references “a group of people united or bound together by strong relationships and common interests.” “Accurate terminology and definitions are essential in social science research,” he concludes, and making this change “might be a better choice for social scientists to use when speaking about these types of communities.”
