Mission

The Chinese-Jewish Conversation

Mission

The Chinese-Jewish Conversation (CJC) was established in 2018 to build a cultural bridge between the Chinese and Jewish communities and provide a welcome space for Chinese students in NYC. It has sponsored periodic comparative seminars by Chinese and Jewish scholars, as well as Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, and informal meetings of students, alumni, and other professionals to foster academic and cultural and connections. Responding to increasing interest within the Chinese community, the CJC is currently launching academic programs in Jewish studies with a comparative perspective designed for Chinese students.

Aims

  1. Increase mutual awareness between Chinese and Jewish communities and cultures
  2. Provide a welcome space for Chinese students at YU

Shared Challenges

  1. Upholding core values, such as family and education
  2. Studying our classical texts, and understanding how they speak to us today
  3. Balancing traditional norms with modern life
  4. Relationship between “homeland” and “diaspora”—communities and individuals
