Etiquette Guidelines for Commencement

Congratulations! We look forward to celebrating with our graduates and their families.

Please give yourself ample time to find parking and seating.

Prohibited items:

  • Alcohol
  •  
  • Noisemakers of any kind
    (including airhorns and cowbells)
  •  
  • Pets
  •  
  • Silly string, confetti and glitter
  •  
  • Helium balloons

  •  
  • Drones
  •  
  • Signs, banners, flags, posters and placards
  •  
  • Laser pointers
  •  
  • Firearms, knives and other weapons
  •  
  • Coolers and wagons

  •  
  • Strollers and car seats
  •  
  • Oversized umbrellas
  •  
  • Backpacks, large bags/purses and luggage
  •  
  • Cans and glass bottles
  •  
  • Food
  •  
  • All other items the University may deem inappropriate
  • Please turn off or silence your cellular phones and other electronic equipment to help ensure that all guests can hear and enjoy the event.
  • Please avoid all unnecessary conversation and movement during the event.
  • Be respectful. Individuals who engage in inappropriate or disruptive behavior (including noisy and unruly children) may be removed from the event.
  • Heckling, booing, protests and demonstrations are not permitted.
  • Everyone must have a ticket. Children should be seated with a responsible adult.
  • Unauthorized alterations to caps and gowns are not permitted, and graduates cannot add items to the prescribed academic costume. Graduates should wear appropriate attire and footwear.
  • Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

We expect everyone to conduct themselves in a dignified manner and comply with these guidelines.
