The pious Jewish man represented in this sculpture wears tefillin (prayer boxes). He appears lost in thought. According to Jewish law, tefillin are the fulfillment of the biblical proscription to bind the words of the Shema prayer and other texts relating to the exodus from Egypt to one’s arm and forehead.
