Library Book Talk | Jozef Pilsudski: Founding Father of Modern Poland {Onsite and via Zoom} POSTPONED Online

Hero or tyrant?

He was fiercely patriotic: dedicating his life to a liberal nation. But in the end he was ruthless: ceding power to democracy, only to retake it by force a few years later.

Joshua Zimmerman will discuss the biography of Poland’s first president, Jozef Pilsudski: Founding Father of Modern Poland (Harvard University Press, 2022). In conversation with Jeffrey Freedman, he will analyze this soldier and statesman’s complex personality and the motives behind his brutal authoritarianism.

Dr. Zimmerman is YU’s Eli and Diana Zborowski Chair in Holocaust Studies and East European Jewish History. Dr. Freedman is Professor of History, Yeshiva University.
