The Department of Physical Education and Athletics sponsors a full spectrum of credit-bearing courses, intercollegiate athletic teams, intramural athletic activities and recreational opportunities. Courses consist of theoretical and practical instruction in the skills, rules, strategies and appreciation of the particular sport or activity. Most require textbooks, strenuous activity and regular participation.

Many different intramural athletic events and tournaments are available to students. Generally held during the evenings, these activities include basketball, three-man basketball, softball, flag football, swimming, floor hockey, roller hockey, soccer and volleyball.

The Max Stern Athletic Center is home to the 1,00-seat Furst Gymnasium, a fully equipped gym with an overhead jogging track. The Gottesman Pool, on the first floor, is a 25-yard, six-lane pool with adjacent sauna, steam room and hot tub.
A top-notch fitness center on the first floor of the Max Stern Athletic Center includes treadmills, elliptical machines, weight machines, stationary bicycles, free weights and other fitness modalities.
