Application Requirements 

General Graduate Record Examination (GRE) required:  

  • Institution code 2995.  
  • Visit www.ets.org for testing locations and dates in your area 

How to Apply: 

Applications are submitted using the PSYCAS application module. For more information on PSYCAS (as administered through the APA and Liasion) please visit American Psychological Association website. A complete application to the Ferkauf Graduate School must include the follow basic information: 

  • Official Undergraduate Transcript (submitted through PSYCAS or mail/email) 
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation (submitted through PSYCAS or mail/email) 
  • 2-3 page Personal Statement (submitted through PSYCAS or mail/email) 
  • (Please write about yourself and your experiences that you believe make you a suitable applicant. Additionally, please tell us what draws you to the field, and to our program in particular. If there are specific faculty whose research area is of interest to you, please indicate.)

Prerequisites 

Applicants are expected to have had at least 15 undergraduate credits in psychology, including courses in general/introductory, statistics, experimental, abnormal and physiological psychology. Courses in related fields such as mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences are also highly recommended. 

If you are not a psychology major, you must take 5 prerequisites in an accredited institution before the fall semester begins. We will need to see official transcripts showing that these courses were taken. Courses can be taken at any accredited institution (state, city, or private college). Exclusively Online institution credits are not accepted. 

  • Introduction to Psychology/Fundamentals of Psychology 
  • Statistics for Psychology Students 
  • Abnormal Psychology/Psychopathology 
  • Research Methods or an advanced research course 
  • Theories of Personality or Social Psychology or Developmental Psychology 
  • Physiological/Experimental Psychology (Brain and Behavior, Cognition and Learning, Cognitive Science, Sensation, Perception and Motivation, Cognitive Psychology, Human Memory, Psycholinguistics, Clinical Neuropsychology, Behavioral Neurobiology) 

Course Transfer 

So that each student has adequate contact with the School and its faculty, all research, reading, directed study, and dissertation credits must be taken at the School, and no more than 12 credits toward a doctoral degree may be transferred from the other institutions. 

Time Limitations 

Requirements for a doctoral degree must be completed within 10 years of admission. Applicants should apply for the year in which they intend to enroll. Applicants who file by the deadlines are expected to enroll in September of the next year. Requests to defer enrollment after an applicant has been granted admission are considered on a case-by-case basis. 

GRE exam scores are NOT required.

Pathways

This option allows undergraduates from Yeshiva College (YC) and Stern College for Women (SCW) to take up to 12 graduate credits that will count toward both their bachelor's and master's degrees. After completing their bachelor's, students can finish their graduate degree in just one more year.  

  1. Admissions criteria: Juniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (no exceptions). Students can begin taking graduate coursework in the fall semester of their senior year. The program does not allow for spring or summer starts.   

  2. Application Requirements: Submission of the graduate application including personal statement and letter of recommendation. YU transcripts will be pulled into the applicant record by the Graduate Admissions Team.

Application Process: NOTE: If you are a YU undergraduate, you already have an account. 

  1. Confirm your interest in the BA/MA program with the Pathways Coordinator (pathways@yu.edu).  

  1. Notify your undergraduate Psychology Department Chair by the end of your second year that you are interested in the BA/MA in Mental Health Counseling.  

  1. Once the Chair approves your request, complete this application form to formally apply to the BA/MA program through Ferkauf Admissions.  

  1. Applications are due by December 1st of your senior year.  

Please note: Summer coursework may be required between sophomore and junior, and junior and senior years in order to be eligible to register for MA courses in your fourth year.

The Admissions Office cannot discuss an applicant's or student's file or any other application material with anyone other than the applicant or student. Exceptions will only be made on a case-by-case basis and under careful evaluation.
