    "I HEAR America singing, the varied carols I hear;
    Those of mechanics—each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong;
    The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam"
    —Walt Whitman,
    Leaves of Grass

    The American studies minor offers students the opportunity to examine culture and society in the United States from an interdisciplinary perspective.

    Students develop an awareness of specific patterns in U.S. history, literature and politics while compiling a set of analytical skills for synthesizing the broad range of experiences that make up a culture or civilization.
