Overview
Chemistry, the central science, serves as the basis for understanding the natural and physical sciences. A college graduate with a major in chemistry or biochemistry is prepared for a wide choice of science related careers.
Career Opportunities
The chemical and pharmaceutical industries provide opportunities for applied chemical research; medicine and the health science fields emphasize the biological aspect of advances in chemistry. Public service minded individuals with a solid science education can find their niche in environmental protection agencies, consumer advocacy groups, and various government offices. In the field of education, there is a nationwide shortage of science teachers on both the elementary and high school levels.
The Major

Students majoring in chemistry take General Chemistry, lecture and laboratory, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, lecture and laboratory, Physical Chemistry lecture, seminars in Advanced Chemistry, and one additional Chemistry course. Calculus and General Physics are also required.
The Minor
The chemistry minor requires General Chemistry, lecture and laboratory, Analytical Chemistry or one semester of Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, lecture and laboratory, and one additional course in chemistry.
Additional Course Offerings
Biochemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Introduction to Science
Special Options
Students interested in a career in chemical engineering may consider the combined engineering program with Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Extracurricular Activities
The college sponsors a Chemistry Club which is affiliated with the American Chemical Society. The award winning club organizes numerous activities of interest to chemistry majors including seminars, lectures, and field trips to academic and industrial research laboratories.
Facilities
State-of-the-art facilities are located on the fifth floor of the Science Wing. The laboratories include computer-interfaced experiments and an instrument room.
