| | Dr. Joshua A. Fishman

Dr. Joshua A. Fishman, Distinguished University Research Professor Emeritus of
Social
Sciences of Yeshiva University, received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Columbia
University in 1953. Dr. Fishman has had Fellow status at the Center for Advanced Studies
in Behavioral Science in Stanford, CA; the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton,
N.J.; East West Center in Honolulu, HA; the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study;
and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Jerusalem. He is an international leader in the
fields of sociolinquistics and bilingual education. His most recent books ares The
Handbook of Language and Ethnicity (2000) and Can Threatened
Language be Saved (2001). He is the founder and serves as the General Editor
of the International Journal of the
Sociology of Language, a post he has held since 1973. Dr. Fishman served as Dean of
the Ferkauf Graduate School of Humanities from 1960-1966 and as Yeshiva University's Vice
President of Academic Affairs from 1973-1975.
