READINGS: Required are all the Chaucerian works on the reading list as well as those items on the online syllabus marked with an asterisk.  The online items without an asterisk are recommended but not required.

ATTENDANCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION: The class will be conducted as a seminar. Faithful and informed participation by all is essential to its success.

RECITATION: As one way of becoming more familiar with the sound and rhythm of Chaucer's verse, you are to memorize (and briefly explicate) a passage of your choice of 25 lines or more (any passage will do except the opening 18 lines).

EXPLICATIONS

1) A well-researched 2-3 page written explication of the lines memorized, due one week after the oral recitation.

2) A 3-4 page written explication of a challenging passage from one of the tales, due mid-semester.

EXAMINATIONS: A SHORT (15-20 MINUTE) QUIZ will be given every 2-3 weeks. You will be asked to identify, translate, or discuss passages from Chaucer and to discuss issues that arose in previous classes. There will be no mid-term examination, though there will be a COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM.

RESEARCH PAPER: An original research paper of ca. 2000 words, due at the end of the semester.
