Monday 7/12:Arrival in Florence, in the afternoon. Walking tour of the center of the city including former Jewish neighborhoods: Borgo San Jacopo, Piazza della Repubblica, via delle Oche. Dinner at Ruth's (kosher restaurant next to current synagogue).
Tuesday 7/13:Visit to the neighborhood of Arcetri, including Galileo's exile home. Visit to the campus of the University of Florence, including tour of the research facilities at LENS (European Laboratory of Non-linear Spectroscopy). Presentation by Dr. Diederik Wiersma: research on condensed matter physics using lasers. Visit to the Astrophysical Observatory of the university. Lecture by Prof. Cwilich: Galileo's dual role: Theoretician or experimenter?
Wednesday 7/14:Visit to the Museum of the History of Science, with the collections of mechanical, hydrostatics, optical and surgical instruments, including the rooms with the Galilean instruments. Lecture by Prof. Cwilich (at the Museum): Galileo's cultural universe: Connection between his artistic knowledge and his astronomical observations. Afternoon visit to the Galleria de l’Accademia guided by Prof. Cohen. Lecture by Prof. Ida Zatelli (U. Florence): " Pico della Mirandola, Biblical Culture and the Rabbinical Tradition".
Thursday 7/15: Day trip to Pisa and Livorno. The historical Tower of Pisa and surrounding sites. The historic synagogue and the Jewish cemetery. Visit to the ancient Jewish community of Leghera. Dr. Liscia Bemporad (President of the Jewish community and art historian) will accompany the students and interpret the sites.
Friday 7/16:Lecture by Prof. Cohen: Jewish Art in Italy. Lecture by Dr. Dora Liscia Bemporad: Jewish ceremonial art. Private viewing of the Jewish Museum and synagogue. Afternoon visit to the Uffizzi Gallery.
Sunday 7/18:Day trip to Siena. Visit of the city including the historic synagogue and former Jewish quarters, the Palazzo Communale and the town center.
Monday 7/19:Train trip to Venice. Tour of the city including Piazza San Marco and the campanile. Possible visit to the Accademia. Visit to the Jewish Ghetto, its Museum and Synagogues. Spend the night at the Casa di Riposo Israelitica (in the Ghetto, at the Canaregio).
Tuesday 7/20:Trip by train to Padua. Visit to the University, including the Palazzo del "Bo" and the Anatomical Theater where Galileo's colleagues and students (William Harvey and Fabrizio d'Aquapendente researched), and to the Museo di Storia de la Fisica, and the XVIth century Orto Botanico (Botanical Garden). Visit to the Capella dei Scrovegni. Visit to the former Jewish neighborhoods. Return to Florence.
Wednesday 7/21:Lecture by Dr. Josef Levi (Chief Rabbi of Florence): Jewish Culture and the Renaissance. Lecture by Dr. Josef Levi: Kabbalah and Science in the writings of a Jewish Student of Galileo ( J.S. Delmedigo). Lecture by Prof. Cohen: Italian XVIth century art, and illuminated Hebrew manuscripts in Italy. Visit to the Palazzo Vecchio. Thursday 7/22:Tisha B'Av
Friday 7/23:Lecture by Prof. Fabrizio Lelli: "Jewish and Christian Cabalistic Studies in Renaissance Florence". Visit to the Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens guided by Prof. Cohen. Free time the City.
Sunday 7/25:Final meeting and departure.
