ISAIAH:OUTLINE

Lecture: Literary-theological reading of selected sections in the book. We
shall examine the history of Jewish Biblical interpretation from Rabbinic
times down to the 20th century. We shall utilize whatever knowledge is
afforded by modern scholarship, plus whatever insight is available to us
through our experience of Western ideas and culture.

Please bring to class Biblical text+Miqraot Gedolot. Other important
commentaries are Ibn Ezra, R. Eliezer of Beaugance, R. Yosef Kara,
Abravanel, Malbim, Shadal. Da`at Miqra volume is of value. Also my
"Courage to Suffer" (Gesher 1979). Additional sources will be discussed in
class as needed or desired.

I intend to study chs. 1-2; 6-12; 22; 28; 36-39. Chapters 40-66 will be
discussed more selectively. Coverage may be enhanced through independent
study and/or written assignment.
