Toronto Partnership Gala Celebration Dinner

Our Toronto Partnership Gala Celebration Dinner, which took place on April 7 at the Copper Creek Golf Club in Kleinburg, was a tremendous success. Please visit our Toronto Gala photo gallery to relive this festive and memorable event.

The Sistine Secrets

Best-selling author Rabbi Benjamin Blech joined us in Vancouver, BC, on May 14 for a sold-out evening. He told the story of how and why Michelangelo incorporated teachings of Jewish Midrash and Kabbalah into the Sistine Chapel—daring ideas unknown to the four million people who visit the site every year.

Be sure not to miss any of our exciting and enriching events. E-mail us at canada@YU.edu to receive updates and advance notification of all the superb programming by the Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University.

DEVELOPMENT

 YU student and professor

In addition to their many activities and resources, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University function as the University’s development arm in Canada, supporting the many services that Yeshiva University is proud to offer to Canadian Jewish communities.

Partnership Opportunities
We need strong lay leadership for our many community initiatives and ongoing commitment to strengthen Yeshiva University. Please let us know if you would be interested in partnering in these noble efforts.

Program Sponsorship
Whether it’s Kollel Yom Rishon, professional development seminars, Torah Tours, youth leadership training, a Shabbaton, or another exciting YU program, your help allows us to bring dynamic programs and educational opportunities to our local communities.

Canadian Scholarship Funds
Yeshiva University is committed to making our unique education affordable to every admitted student.

For Canadian students, the Office of Student Aid is fully aware of factors like the relative strength of the U.S. and Canadian dollars, the cost of day school education for siblings, travel costs for visits home, etc. Canadian students benefit from a variety of special scholarships, and one of our goals is to create more such programs.

Our initiatives include the Jewish Education Scholarship Programme (JESP), a three-way partnership of Canadian donors, Canadian students, and YU to train educators for Canadian Jewish schools.

Please help make the dream of a YU education a reality for more young women and men.

Memorial or Honorary Donations
There’s no better way to commemorate the passing of a loved one, or to express gratitude and joy on a happy occasion, than by contributing to the growth of our communities and future leaders. A beautiful card acknowledging your gift will be sent to the individuals you designate.

Please contact our offices to make your gift. All donations are 100% tax deductible.

Executive and Professional Heritage Initiative (EPHI)
Fall 2007

This initiative will “bring wisdom to life” through the marriage of Torah and Madda (secular wisdom) by affording participants the opportunity to examine their professional concerns through the prism of Jewish thought, law, and tradition. EPHI will tackle current issues in specific fields, including law, medicine, real estate, and mental health. Participants will earn continuing education credits specific to their professions, enjoy forums addressing current issues in their fields, and grapple with their occupational concerns in practical and meaningful ways.

CANADA NEWS

Whether by inspiring communities, developing Jewish leaders, or celebrating Jewish history and culture, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University help bring wisdom to life, sharing the richness of Torah Umadda.

Inspiring Communities

This past winter, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University launched a four-week model of the highly successful Kollel Yom Rishon Sunday learning program. Lecturers included Rabbi Menachem Genack (CEO of Orthodox Union and Rosh Yeshiva) along with Rabbi Dr. Jacob J. Schacter, Rabbi Mordechai Willig, and Rabbi Ozer “Tony” Glickman. Some 250 people participated each week. CDs from the seminars are available upon request by writing to canada@yu.edu.

Throughout the year, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University organized Shabbatonim in communities across Toronto, Dollard, and Montréal, attended by over 400 participants. Scholars-in-residence included Rabbi Yosef Blau, Mashgiach Ruchani of REITS, and Dr. David Srolovitz, Dean of Yeshiva College. YU students assisted in running youth programs.

Developing Jewish Leaders

To kick off the year, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University sponsored a conference for social workers in Toronto: “Children of Holocaust Survivors: Responses to Second and Third Generations” Over 300 people participated. The conference was followed by a Wurzweiler alumni reunion at Gladstone’s Wine Bar & Grill, attended by more than 80 people.

During the winter, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University hosted a seminar and dinner for twenty-five Jewish medical practitioners on “Artificial Insemination, Posthumous Paternity and Surrogate Motherhood through the Prism of Jewish Law.” Rabbi Kenneth Brander, an expert in the field of fertility and taharat hamishpacha, led the proceedings.

To welcome Pesach, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University along with the Legacy Heritage Rabbinic Enrichment Initiative hosted a conference in Montréal. Fifteen Canadian rabbis explored rabbinic challenges and contemporary solutions under the guidance of Rabbi Menachem Liebtag, Rabbi Dr. Jacob J. Schacter, and Rabbi Howard Jachter.

Eminent personalities such as Rabbi Herschel Schachter, Dr. David Schatz, Rabbi Shalom Carmy, and Dr. Arnold Lustiger offered insights on this inspiring figure. The event was co-sponsored with Torah in Motion.

In March 2007, over 350 people attended a Montréal screening of the documentary film The Lonely Man of Faith: The Life and Legacy of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. The evening also included a remarkable presentation by Rabbi Kenneth Brander.
