ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education, partnering with the Yeshiva University Center for the Jewish Future, is taking the next step in advancing the mission of Jewish education. It has established the Institute for Educational Partnership and Applied Research, an innovative and comprehensive initiative that will:
- Strengthen and support the Jewish educational experience while improving the outcomes of students in Jewish schools
- Develop the professional skills of teachers, supporting them to become more effective in their professional roles as experts in pedagogy and content-knowledge
- Empower school administrators to be transformative leaders in their schools and communities
- Identify and recruit top college graduates to expose and train them in the field of Jewish Education through a two year training fellowship servicing Jewish day schools across North America
- Reinforce and build the leadership capabilities and Jewish knowledge of school lay leaders, and
- Connect Jewish schools with Yeshiva University to the benefit of both as resources for resolving educational issues through research and translating that research into practical application.
COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE
As the profession of Jewish education matures, dialogue in key areas of educational practice becomes ever more important. The Institute has plans to launch a Community of Practice (CoP) on each of several topics that have been identified as priorities by practitioners. These include: Issues in Modern Orthodox Education, Teaching Gemara, Teaching General Studies in a Jewish School, Israel Guidance, Teaching Jewish History, Student Activities (Informal Education), Technology, Teaching Jewish History, and Early Childhood Education.
Each CoP will include monthly conference calls, a website with information, materials, and an online discussion board, and a conference.
The Community of Practice on Issues in Modern Orthodox Education launches in the fall of 2007, with a Conference and Shabbaton planned for February 28 – March 2, 2008.
For more information about our Communities of Practice, please contact Devorah Aroesty-Cohen at 212-960-5400 ext. 6943 or daroesty@yu.edu.
PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CJF
The participation of the Yeshiva University Center for the Jewish Future in our efforts ensures congruence with such successful student and educator programming as the Torah Learning Network, Eimatai, Achshav, school and community kollelim, and the Global Learning Initiative.
In addition, the Institute will partner with CJF’s Jewish Career Development and Placement office to advise and counsel candidates for careers in Jewish education as well as schools and communities seeking personnel.
For more information on the Global Learning Initiative please contact Nathan Kruman at 212-960-5400 ext. 6353 or kruman@yu.edu.

APPLIED RESEARCH PROJECTS
The Institute provides professional development services to schools as part of ongoing applied research projects on topics such as Differentiated Instruction, Supervision of Instruction, School Leadership, School Governance, Bully Prevention, Religious and Spiritual Development, and Hebrew Literacy.
Data on implementation and effect are gathered, analyzed, and results published so knowledge in each area grows, and future professional development and Jewish educational practice are advanced.
