BERNARD REVEL GRADUATE SCHOOL
OF JEWISH STUDIES
YESHIVA UNIVERSITY
MEMORANDUM
TO: All BRGSJS Students
FROM: Dr. Arthur Hyman, Dean
DATE: August 11, 2008
As the fall semester approaches, I wish to share with you information that you will need. Please read this memo carefully since it contains dates and procedures that are important and for which you are responsible. The dates and regulations are set by the University and just as we are obligated to enforce them, so are you obligated to abide by them.
Please be aware that the last day for dropping a course without a financial penalty is Monday October 6, 2008. Anyone dropping a course after that date will be subject to financial penalties set by the University.
Registration
As a service to its students, the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies offers online registration. In accordance with this mode of registration, BRGSJS students may register online between August 13 and August 29, 2008. Instructions for online registration are enclosed and can be found on the BRGSJS website. BRGSJS students are urged to avail themselves of this new procedure. However RIETS students must register in person.
In person registration for the fall semester will take place Wednesday and Thursday, August 27th and 28th from 2:00-5:30 p.m. The registration process starts in the BRGSJS office. Those students who cannot register online or who cannot register at the specified time in person should call Ms. Warren at (212) 960-5253/54 during regular office hours to make alternate arrangements.
First Day of Classes
First day of classes will take place on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 (Dr. Aster's first class will meet on Sunday, September 7th.)
Continuous Record
Students should be aware that they must have a continuous record at BRGSJS. MA students who have completed the course work but are making up assignments, are studying for the comprehensive examinations, or students who wish to take a leave of absence must register in the appropriate category during the regular registration period.
Comprehensive Written Examinations for the MA Degree
The written Comprehensive Examination for September 2008 candidates will be given on Wednesday, September 17th, and for the January 2009 candidates on December 10, 2008.
To take the examination a student must be an active student, must have completed all the courses for the MA and musthave handed in all the required work. Students with an “Incomplete” on their record are not eligible to take the examination.
Graduation
Students who expect to graduate in September 2008 must file an application for the degree immediately, and for the January 2009 degree by Monday, October 6, 2008. They should also check with the office to make sure that their academic record is in order. They must make sure the final transcript of your undergraduate degree is on file in order for them to graduate.
Incompletes
According to the rules of the school, the work for a given semester must be completed by the end of that semester. Since there are sometimes circumstances beyond the student's control which do not permit this, school regulations provide that the student has a semester and a summer to complete such work. The fellowship will not be renewed if work is not submitted within this time frame.
In clarification of the last paragraph, the faculty asked me to inform students who studied at Revel during the academic year 2007-2008 or in prior years that the deadline for submitting work taken during the fall semester 2007 or an earlier semester is January 1, 2009. After that date any missing grade will automatically be turned into an "F". Similarly, any scholarship or fellowship awarded for the academic year 2008-2009 will be cancelled for the spring semester 2009 if the missing work described is not submitted by January 1, 2009.
All late work must be handed in to the Revel office, not to the instructor.
Withdrawal from courses
Students who wish to withdraw/drop from a course must file the appropriate form at the Revel office. If the form is submitted by Wednesday, November 12th, the course will not appear on the student's record, if it is submitted after this date it will appear on the student's record with a “ W ”.
If a student drops a course without filing the form, his/her name will appear on the grade sheet and the instructor is required to enter a “G”. A “G” is counted as a failure (“F”).
Tuition Scholarships and Fellowships
Students wishing to apply for an award for the academic year 2009-10 must submit an application by Friday, February 27, 2009. The applications are available online and in the Revel office. Students are reminded that these awards are not automatically renewed, so that those who held an award during the current academic year and wish to be a candidate for the next academic year must hand in a new application.
Important Notice
Because of the negligence of some of our tuition scholarship students, we have lost funds that could have been awarded to students who applied for them and who needed them. It is the purpose of this memo to remedy this situation.
According to the rules of the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies, students have the first two meetings of each course to add or drop a course without a financial penalty. After these two weeks “financial penalties start in accordance with University Policy.” The problem arose because students have dropped courses after two weeks had passed and Revel was not reimbursed for these dropped courses. In order to remedy this situation we shall now enforce this rule in accordance with the university policy.
According to the calendar for the fall semester 2008 students have until Monday, October 6th to drop a course. After this date, students will be charged (and must pay) for dropping a course—1/4 of the tuition for dropping it after 1 week, ½ of the tuition for dropping it after 2 weeks, ¾ of the tuition for dropping it after 3 weeks, and the full tuition for dropping it after 4 weeks. Students will also not get a tuition scholarship (and must pay) for courses added after Monay, October 6th .
Parking
Students who need parking arrangements should contact the Revel Office at (212) 960-5253 as soon as possible so we can mail you a form. Space is limited.
As you begin or continue your studies at Revel, I send you my best wishes for a productive and enjoyable semester.
I want to emphasize again that students who do not plan to take classes during the fall semester must register in the appropriate category during the registration period.
Again - Please read this memo carefully.
